Further information: New Ormonde Branch secretary wrote initially February 1951: 'This member has been down the pit 46 doing all the stoneheading at our colliery […] the medical board […] assessed him at less than 20 per cent'. In medical report of April 1951: 'this man is suffering from auricular fibrillation and some myocardial defect [...] He will not be fit for heavy work again' and an opthalmic specialist report in May 1951 stated 'Miner's Nystagmus with minimal oscillation but some degree of neurosis'. Allsop wrote to Mr Kitts, Area Compensation Agent: 'the verdict has upset me and I must fight on principle for my rights' requesting further medical examination. Mr Bamford, Senior Opthalmic Surgeon at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary stated February 1952 'I think he is still unfit to work underground'. A 20 per cent assessment was made and the Insurance officer brought an appeal against this.
