Further information: The accident caused three fractured vertebrae and aggravation of pre-existing arthritis. Doctor's letter of 3 January 1953 states; 'Briggs […] has disability of the back which […] in my opinion, precludes him from working at the coal face'. 'The patient looks old for his years' (Medical Board, May 1952). This appeal was against a 5 per cent life assessment.
