Further information: Following an accident on 28 July 1948, Conroy was left with a corneal scar, reduced vision and photophobia. Following the accident he was working as a gate belt cleaner. His regular occupation had been as a chargeman. Supporting letter states 'prior to the accident [...] he was 'on contract', this being a reference to a system common in the Derbyshire coalfield of working by gangs at a rate which varied [...] as a result of direct negotiation between the chargeman of a particular gang and the pit manager'. Evidence [from whom?] at Special Hardship hearing 14/07/1949 includes: 'Needs a man with full faculties (e.g. both eyes) at coal face, it is so dangerous'. Much of the paperwork concerns pre and post accident earnings in a lot of detail. A handwritten note dated 28 April 1950 states 'very ill (cancer) [...] To neighbours called for Mrs Conroy she cannot leave him' A decision on 22 October 1950 awarded disablement at 30 per cent from 28 November 1950 to 27 November 1952 and Special Hardship allowance awarded of 7/6 from 29 November 1950 to 27 November 1951. There is no paperwork relating to an appeal Tribunal decision.
