Further information: Chivers had an accident on 16 November 1948 and was recommended by a letter dated 19 October 1949 for permanent light work. Following an examination by the Medical Board on 13 April 1950, the decision was that there is now no loss of faculty' and a 'NIL' disablement was given. A letter dated 24 May 1950 from the Compensation Agent states 'I have instructed Chivers to lodge an appeal against the last assessment.' The grounds of appeal 'are that I am very much handicapped as a result of the accident [...] also in pain all the time unable to walk any distance cannot do any lifting or shovelling.' The decision of the tribunal on 27 July 1950 was in Chivers' favour.
