The accident occurred in 1967 when a fall of rock knocked him onto a moving belt and he felt he was walking 'veering to one side' with chest pain. Then over two weeks a hemiplegia developed. Consultant opinion suggested that the accident could have caused a temporary rise in blood pressure which precipitated the cerebral thromboais but this was not certain.
