Further information: Recommended for light work only after the accident (in which Betts was struck on the left thigh and back by a case) according to a Doctor's note dated 14 January 1952. The paperwork relates to a Local Appeal Tribunal dated 8 February 1952 in relation to Special Hardship Allowance. After accident the claimant worked at 'Screens Bat Picking.' A typed note dated 11 January 1952 states 'Disablement 8% for life.' The question of the claimant's ability to do overtime is raised and he states on a report 'Before the accident I worked on Saturdays and Sundays too if required. At the end of a shift my back is painful. I live at Cotmanhay. I rest on Saturdays and Sundays. I don't garden. It would knock me up if I tried to do overtime.' A Doctor's note dated 14 January 1952 states 'I consider this man is fit for light work only.' There is no record of the tribunal's final decision.
