Payne had an inguinal herniotomy. Claimant's grounds of appeal included: 'Frankly I was astonished when I found out that my payment slip only entitled me to the princely sum of £1:18:6d weekly. [...] at other times I had the misfortune to have serious accidents beforee the introduction of the present scheme I have always returned to my work without compensation.[...] owing to partial deafness [...] I am unable to hear conversations that might have enabled me to learn that I had failed to do something I should have done'
