Title	Matthew Frost's letter book and day book, marked "Letters and Memorandums" on the front cover. Inscribed "received this letter book of Francis, 8th Earl of Newburgh of Hassop Hall from the hands of Dr [William] Cantrell, Winster, County of Derby, in the presence of Thomas Daubney, farmer, Great Longstone on the 18th day of April 1887 by the undersigned - Gladwin Cloves Cave".

Description	Matthew Frost (1781-1849) was Land Agent to Thomas the first Baron Denman (1779-1854) and to the self-styled 8th Earl of Newburgh, Francis Eyre (1762-1827). He was also Head Barmaster of the High Peak, and surveyor to various turnpike trusts: Ashford and Buxton (see D686), Cromford to Belper (D272), Chesterfield and Hernstone Lane Head, Nottingham 3rd District, Sheffield and Glossop. Although the original catalogue entry for this book described it simply as "Hassop Hall Estate letter book and day book", inspection by researcher Ann Hall (May 2016) suggests the volume also reflects the varied career of Matthew Frost. As well as copies of letters written in the service of the Eyres, the book contains a range of other letters, some relating to Frost's lead trade interests, and at least one addressed to his grandson; as well as accounts including of lead ore measured in the Kings Field, in the liberties of Stoney Middleton, Eyam, Ashford, Peak Forest and Hartington. Matthew Frost was also the father of Dr William Cantrell's second wife, Elizabeth. For further biographical research on Matthew Frost, see the attached Word document.
