DescriptionThe following are named as the liberi hominies (free men) of the parish: Simon son of Hugh; William son of Richard; Ralph son of Simon; Robert son of Robert, chaplain; Roger of Bollesovere [Bolsover]; Robert son of Alan; William Harang; Robert son of Susanne; Adam son of Roger; Hugh of Staumforde and Hawisa his wife; Roger the tailor and Isabella his wife; Cecilia daughter of Adam; Letia daughter of William son of Richard.

All fifteen appended their seals to the abbey’s half of the indenture, but in a slightly different order to the list in the document and with some differences in the name given in the document, for example Robert son of Susanne is ‘Robert son of Richard’ on his seal, Isabella wife of Roger the tailor is ‘Isabella daughter of Andrew’ on her seal.

Dark green wax with traces of varnish on parchment tag with name Simon son of Hugh.
Pointed oval, 40x25mm, fair impression.
Motif description: Crescent facing left with star (?sun) to left.
Legend: + S’ SIOM[. . . .] : HVGONIS.

Seal 2:
Dark green wax with traces of varnish on parchment tag with name William son of Richard.
Round, c.40mm (now 40x27mm), most of left and right edges lost, fair impression.
Motif description: ornate stylised lily
Legend: + S [section lost] I FIL [section lost]

Seal 3:
Dark green wax with traces of varnish on parchment tag with name Ralph son of Simon.
Round, c.33mm (no 30x33mm), right edge and most of left side lost, illegible impression.
Legend lost.

Seal 4:
Dark green wax on parchment tag with name Robert the chaplain.
Round, c.37mm (now 34x37mm), damage to right edge, clear impression.
Motif description: Four ears of wheat (?conifer branches) in form of cross, with elongated pellets in the angles.
Legend: + SIGILL’ ROB’ FIL’I ROB’TI

Seal 5:
Dark green wax with traces of varnish on parchment tag with name Roger of Bollesovere.
Round, c.34 mm (now 34x32mm), damage to lower right and top left, fair impression.
Motif description: stylised lily.
Legend: + SIGILL [section lost] [. .] [section lost]

Seal 6:
Dark green wax with traces of varnish on parchment tag with name Robert son of Alan.
Round, c.44mm (now 44x32mm), damage to edges, faint impression.
Motif description: ornate stylised lily.
Legend: + SIG[. . . .]ROB[. . . . .]ANI

Seal 7:
Dark green wax with traces of varnish on parchment tag with name William Harage.
Round, c.40mm (now 40x30mm), damage to edges and upper left edge lost, fair impression.
Motif description: ornate stylised lily.

Seal 8:
Dark green wax with traces of varnish on parchment tag with name Robert son of Susanne.
Round, c.37mm (now 37x32mm), much of right edge lost, fair impression.

Seal 9:
Parchment tag with name Adam son of Roger, wax lost.

Seal 10:
Dark green wax with traces of varnish on parchment tag with name Hugh of Staumforde.
Uncertain (?round), now 38x23mm, upper right, bottom and left side lost, faint impression.
Motif description: Circle (rounded arch) with object within, line (?figure) above (?merchant mark).
Legend: + [remainder lost]

Seal 11:
Dark green wax with traces of varnish on parchment tag with name Hawisia wife of Hugh.
Round, 34mm, clear impression.
Motif description: S-shaped foliage scrolls emerging from central stem.
Legend: + SI [section lost] [. . . . . .]A[.]

Seal 12:
Parchment tag with name Roger the tailor, wax lost.

Seal 13:
Dark green wax on parchment tag with name Isabella wife of Roger.
Pointed oval, 34x35mm, clear impression.
Motif description: ornate double-headed stylised lily.
Legend: + [.]IGILL’ ISA[. . .] . F[. .]E ANDRI’

Seal 14:
Dark green wax with traces of varnish on parchment tag with name Cecilia daughter of Andrew.
Pointed oval, 30x25mm, some damage to left edge, clear impression.
Motif description: bird with wings raised walking to left (with legend starting at 9 o’clock in relation to image; walking up with legend starting at 12 o’clock)

Seal 15:
Parchment tag with name Letia daughter of William, wax lost.
