Title
Outram v. Morewood
Date
[1597]-1801
Description
Documents in a lengthy dispute between Benjamin and Joseph Outram and Mrs. Ellen Morewood. At Summer Assizes 1792 Outram brought an action against Morewood for getting coal under Cow Close, Alfreton. Mrs. Morewood's defence was that she was entitled to the coal under the will of her late husband, who had purchased the mineral rights from the representative of John Turner, to whom they were conveyed by Sir John Zouch in 1617. Although her title was not clear, the jury found for the defendant. Outram then attempted to prove, at the second trial, that Cow Close never had in fact belonged to the Zouches. The outcome of this trial is not known, but the dispute continued until at least 1801 - See D184/9/33-58.
