Thursday after feast of St Mark the Evangelist 17 Hen VIII [27 Apr 1525]. b) Will of Rowland Revell of Mansfield with reference to property in Nottinghamshire, offices of the Bailiwick of Peveril as in deed of [29 Sep 1529], son William by Sybil Duke, her unborn child, brother Tristram, bastard brother Randle, Robert Revell of Augston [?Ogston], property in Mansfield, daughter Elnor, term of years in Woodhouse Mylne, property in Mansfield Woodhouse, wife Mary. (23 Oct 1529). For a calendar of the will, see under "Description" c) Surrender and admission by Thomas Leake of Beauchief, a feoffee of Edmund Sandford together with John Morehawe and Henry Hince of Spinkell, of lands, tenements etc in Mansfield and Mansfield Woodhouse, which Thomas had of the gift and surrender of Edmund, together with lands and tenements which Thomas had of the gift and surrender of Roland Revell, to named persons, for performance of the will of Roland Revell. Fine 12d. 21 Apr 1544. d) Surrender and admission by William Walker mercer and William Boulser of lands tenements etc in Mansfield and Mansfield Woodhouse had with others of the gift and surrender of Thomas Leake of Beauchief, for performance of Roland's will. Fine 4d. 24 Nov 1551. With an undated note by Robert Revell that when these lands were surrendered by William his father, law and custom required that proclamation should be made on 3 court days following the sale, since their copyhold was in ancient demesne and the lands were a lawful inheritance to William. Since no proclamation was made Robert is of the opinion that the land either reverts to the family or escheats to the lord. English

DescriptionCalendar of D184/4/2b: Will of Rowlande Revell of Mansfeld [Mansfield], bequeathing his soul to Almighty God and our blessed lady his Mother and all the holy company of heaven; his body to be buried in the parish church of St Leonard at Basforde in our lady queen, or else where God's pleasure is; bequeathing to the ornament of the church where his body lies 6s 8d; to 1000 poor men, women and children 1000 farthing white loaves the day of his burial and after; a trental of masses of St Gregory to be devoutly said by some good priest or friar within one year after his death, either the priest or his house to have 30s. for his pains. To Thomas Prior of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity of Lenton, Nicholas Strilley, Edmunde Sandford and Roger Greenhalgh his manors, lands, tenements and rents in Nottinghamshire with the offices of the Bailiwick of Peveril Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire as contained in his deed dated Michaelmas 21 Henry VIII [29 September 1529], in trust to the use of Willyam Revell his son, begotten of Sybbell Duke, in tail male, remainder to the son now quick in her womb in tail male, and remainders to the testator's brother Tristram, his bastard brother Randle, Robarte Revell now Augston [? Ogston] and the next heirs of the testator, all in tail male. To Thomas Leake, John of Moreall and Henry Hince customary messuages, lands and tenements in the manor of Mannsfeld [Mansfield] to suffer such persons as are afterwards assigned to take the issues and profits; that is to say to Sybbell Duke the occupation and profits of a tenement in Stockwell Gate now in the holding of John Duke, a close in the holding of Edwarde Chambers and the tenement in the Market Steede called the Talbotte [Talbot] for her life, remainder to his son Willyam with all other lands and tenements when he is 21; in the meantime Nicholas Strilley is to have custody of him and the profits of all the testator's manors, lands, tenements and offices, and is to find Willyam at school, and give Elnor the testator's daughter, when she is 15, 20 marks for her marriage, and the child of Sybbell, if a daughter, another 20 marks, and if a son 20 marks when he is of age. He wishes that when his son is of age his feoffees of his freehold and copyhold land cause an estate to be made to the son in tail male. He bequeaths to Sybbell Duke his terms of years in Woodhouse Mylne and in the intake closes in the fields of Mannsfeld to find the child which she goes great with; if the child is male, the feoffees of his copyfeld of his lands and tenements in Mansfeld Woodhouse until the child is 21, and if the son dies before then, those who have the custody of the daughter are to have custody of her until she is 16; if either dies the remainder to go to the longer liver; to Marye his wife while unmarried £5 of yearly rent.
