Description
Note on small piece of paper in front of Day Book (see below) says: "These Cash Books, Stock Book and Day Book relate to the business of William WASSE of 2 Crooked Lane, London Wine Spirit Merchant and of Derbyshire. There is a vast amount of material in this collection relating on the administration of his and other estates for the benefit of his posthumous son Douglas WASSE etc etc."
Cash Book A Sep 1840-Sep 1842 (no owner's name or Company title given) - income & expenditure lists by month, giving names.
Cash Book B Sep 1842-July 1853 (no owner's name or Company title given) - income & expenditure lists by month, giving names. Page 72 for income Feb 1845 states: "Recd by Check on a/c from Mr John BOYN Junr to whom I have sold my business & stock in Crooked Lane Chambers, which sum being in part payment for the same... £300
Cash book entries finish in May 1845. There follows a section titled "Executors Ledger, Account of Securities & Interest thereon in the benefit of Douglas WASSE whilst an infant. From May 1850 the time of the decease of Catharine WASSE his mother, by Ralph WASSE of Normanton, Derbyshire". Only a few pages.
Stock Book Oct 1840- (no owner's name or Company title given) - the 'stock' is all alcohol: sherry, port, champagne, etc. Includes names, presumably of suppliers or recipients. Dates: 1840-41, except a few pages for Port dated 1834.
Day Book Sep 1840-Feb 1844: Entries of income or expenditure per day, giving names. Names seen: Henry TOLKIEN. Mr Philip HUBBERSTY of Wirksworth.
Loose documents : large no. of letters and documents relating to the WASSE family, including Douglas WASSE in Brooklyn New York, and Joseph STONE solicitor in Wirksworth. Dated between 1840s and 1870s. Included:
