| Administrative History | Clifford Lewis Tucker (1912-1993). Born in Redditch to Welsh parents and brought up in Monmouth, Wales, he was working as a personnel officer for ICI in the Manchester area at the outset of the Second World War. By 1940 this work brought him to ICI's quarries at Buxton. During the war years he continued to work for ICI while also serving as a Labour Party councillor on Buxton Municipal Borough Council, as well as lecturing for the Buxton branch of the Workers Educational Association and working for the Civil Defence Service, where he provided intelligence reports on local morale for the Ministry of Information. After the war, he moved to London and continued his career as a personnel officer. He also continued to serve in local government, becoming an alderman of Stepney Council in 1954 and of St Pancras Borough Council in 1962. He later became a magistrate, serving as chairman of the justices in the Thames division of the Inner London Magistrates Court, and was also a prominent member of the Howard League for Penal Reform |
