Title
Letter in praise of Captain. Greenwood [copy by Thomas Sanders] - after much soliciting of Sir John Gell we prevailed for some small assistance of horse and foot from Derby to join with us and keep the garrison at Barton Park [at Barton Blount] to prosecute a design on Tutbury Town where many of the enemy's horse lay - Captain. Greenewood, governor of Barton garrison who has a commission under Major Sanders, and his troop of 100 horse, being dismounted entered the town, being seconded by Captain Villiers and 20 horse - they marched to the town end undetected and found one sentry who ran away - we marched up the great street to the cross and possessed ourselves of the guard - we had not further opposition and took about 2 (sic) prisoners and 120 horse - this poor honest Captain. Greenwood is stifled of encouragement, on purpose to squander his troop, because honest men, and others, wicked soldiers, because favoured by Sir John Gell, have their pay - these soldiers have but 5s a week for each man, whereas his own have 8s - thus the world may see how it fares with honest men [Aug]
