Administrative History
The Avenue Coking Plant and Chemical Works were built between 1952 and 1956 to produce smokeless domestic fuel (coke) and a range of by-products ultimately 18 million tonnes of fuel a year. The Avenue Coking Plant closed in 1992. In 2005 grants of £104/5 million were awarded for remediation to counteract environmental contamination on the site. It is proposed that the area will become a leisure park.
