Administrative History | According to an article by Steve Lewis (see http://www.stevelewis.me.uk/page62.php), Mullany was persuaded not to advance his ideas at the hustings, leaving only three candidates for what was a two-candidate constituency. The successful candidates were Augustus Peter Arkwright (1821-1887) of the Conservative party and Lord George Henry Cavendish (1810-1880) of the Liberals were elected, while the other Liberal B W Jackson was defeated. Nationally, the first election to be contested under a franchise which had been greatly expanded by the second Great Reform Act of 1867 resulted in an increased majority for the Liberals, led by William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898). |
