Description | Inspeximus by Edward III of a charter of King John granting to William Briewerr the manor of Cestrefeld [Chesterfield] with Briminton [Brimington] and Withinton [Whittington] and the soke and wapentake of Scarnedale [Scarsdale], to hold the said manor with the same liberties and customs as the burgesses of Nottingham have, that is Chesterfield to be a free borough, no burgess or merchant in Chesterfield or the said wapentake to have the customs except William Briewerr. To have a fair at the Exaltation of the Cross [14 September] for 8 days and a market on two days a week , that is Tuesday and Saturday, and to take toll from the said fair and market. Grant also of the manors of Snodinton (Nottinghamshire) and Axmenistr' [Axminster, Somerset] with the hundred of Axmenistr' with a market on Sundays at Axmenistr' and the fishery of Kingeswere, (Somerset). To be held at 3 knights' fees.
