| Biography | Tom was enslaved on the Turners Hall sugar plantation in Barbados and first appears in the records on 31 December 1759. He was the son of Dunco. In the 1771 list he was described as 'mulatto' and was apprenticed to a carpenter. A 'mulatto' was a person of mixed African and European descent; his mother was an enslaved African, and his father was probably an enslaver. In 1780 he was described as a carpenter, married to Molly Bind, with a daughter called Betsy. |
