Administrative History | Mitchell Main Colliery was sunk in the early 1870s by Joseph Mitchell (1807-1876) near another colliery owned by him called Swaithe Main Colliery in Wombwell, 4 miles south east of Barnsley, Yorkshire. It was a rival of Darfield Main Colliery (sunk in the late 1850s) just two thirds of a mile east from it. The Mitchell Main Colliery Company Limited was registered as a company in 1883. Darfield Main and Mitchell Main collieries were merged in the early 1900s. Prior to nationalisation in 1947 Shipley Collieries Limited had become the major shareholder in Mitchell Main Colliery Company Limited, owning 90% of shares in 1942. |
