Shirebrook Colliery Limited
National Coal Board
Administrative History
The company was established in 1894 with Arnold Lupton as Managing Director. It was given its Certificate of Incorporation as Shirebrook Colliery Limited a year later. Lupton left the company following a 17 week wage dispute in 1898. The company only ever owned the one colliery at Shirebrook, which had a sizeable workforce of well over a thousand workers at any one time in its pre-vesting history once it came into full-time production.
In 1947 Shirebrook Colliery was transferred to the control of the National Coal Board as a result of the nationalisation of the coal industry.
