A village and civil parish in the Hope Valley area of the Peak District National Park, situated on the north bank of the River Derwent. Surrounded by gritstone moorlands and edges, including Stanage Edge, it is known for its historic parish church, connections with the legend of Little John, and literary associations with Charlotte Brontë, whose visits to the area helped inspire Jane Eyre.
