Notes
Ancient parish - The ecclesiastical parish of Glossop originally included the townships or hamlets of Whitfield, Chunal, Dinting, Hadfield and part of Padfield (which all became part of the new parish of Whitfield in 1846); Charlesworth, Chisworth and Simmondley (which became the separate parish of Charlesworth in 1849); the remainder of Padfield was added to the new parish of Hadfield in 1875. Also formerly included chapelries of Hayfield (with townships of New Mills, Chinley, Buxworth and Brownside) until mid-19th century, and Mellor (with township of Ludworth) until 1859.
See Cheshire Archives and Local Studies DSA 194 for a Sketch-book dated 1817 containing several views of Glossop and district by Edward Stanley (1779-1849), rector of Alderley, 1805-1837, later Bishop of Norwich.
