Ecclesiastical parish established mid-19th century, formerly a chapelry in the parish of Glossop. Includes the hamlets of Great Hamlet, Kinder and Phoside. Also formerly included the hamlets of Beard, Ollersett, Thornsett and Whitle (which became the new parish of New Mills in 1831) and Chinley, Buxworth and Brownside (which became the new parish of Chinley with Buxworth in 1915).
