| Biography | The Jessop family are descended from William Jessop, born in Devonport in 1754, who in 1791 joined what was to become the Butterley Company. A distinguished engineer who undertook commissions all over the country, William died at Butterley in November 1814. ¶ ¶His eldest son, John, became an army major and married Martha M de Burgh. Major Jessop died in 1869, to be succeeded by his eldest son, William, the last member of the family to be a partner in the Butterley Company. ¶ ¶Of the first William Jessop s six other sons, four were involved in some way with the Butterley Company. These were Josias (d1826), William (d1852), Henry and George, who together formed the iron company Jessop & Co in India about 1820. |
