History
When the National Health service was established in 1948 hospital services in Derbyshire came under the auspices of the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board. This Board covered the administrative counties of West Yorkshire, Derby (except that part included in the Manchester Regional Hospital Area), Leicester, parts of Lincoln, Nottingham and Rutland.
Below the Regional Hospital Board there were Hospital Management Committees. In Derbyshire there were initially five, viz:
- Chesterfield Hospital Management Committee
- Derby No. 1 Hospital Management Committee
- Derby No.2 Hospital Management Committee
- Derby No. 3 Hospital Management Committee
- Derby No. 4 Hospital Management Committee
In 1974 with the Reorganisation of the Health Service Act all the Hospital Management Committees were disbanded. The Trent Regional Health Authority became responsible for the geographic areas previously covered by the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board and hospital services in Derbyshire were coordinated by the new Derbyshire Area Health Authority of which there were three districts: North Derbyshire, Central Derbyshire, South Derbyshire
