Biography
Matthew William Peters was born on the Isle of Wight; his parents were Irish and moved to Dublin when Peters was young. He received artistic training in Dublin, London and Florence. He began exhibiting his works on his return to England in 1765, and was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1771. As an artist he was known as William Peters.
He was ordained in 1781 and served as chaplain to the Royal Academy and the Prince of Wales. In 1784 he was awarded the living of Scalford, Leicestershire, and subsequently other livings by the Duke of Rutland; he was also curator of pictures for the Duke at Belvoir Castle.
He married Margaret Knowsley in 1790, and the couple had five children.
