HMS Investigator was purchased by the Admiralty in 1848 to accompany HMS Enterprise on James Clark Ross's expedition to find Sir John Franklin's missing ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror in the Arctic. On the return journey she became trapped in ice at Mercy Bay and was abandoned.
