Joanna Hopkinson received payments under the will of William Heathcote of the colony of Demerary, planter. The will described her as 'a free coloured woman'
Other Information
At the time Joanna was described was a 'free woman', although the British Empire had abolished its transatlantic trade in human beings (1807), individuals particularly of African heritage continued to be enslaved on plantations in the West Indies and elsewhere.
