He was known early on for his horse portraits; in 1851 he painted The Arctic Council Discussing a Plan of Search for Sir John Franklin, which was exhibited at the Royal Aacdemy in 1853 and created a huge impression; Lady Franklin commissioned him to paint other Arctic explorers.
