He served under Captain George Back on H.M.S. Terror in voyage on the Arctic, 1836-1837. Served as First Lieutenant of the Investigator with Captain Bird in the Arctic expedition of Sir James Clark Ross in 1848. Promoted to Captain of the Investigator in 1849 and appointed as senior officer in expedition (with the Enterprise under Richard Collinson) to renew the search for Sir Joh Franklin by way of the Bering Strait. After four years wintered in the ice, McClure and his men on the Investigator returned to England in September 1854. He was knighted on 21 Nov 1855.
