Administrative History | Major Thomas Gell (1788-1865) was the son of Philip and Elizabeth Gell of Wirksworth in Derbyshire. During the Peninsular War he served with the 29th Regiment of Foot and was a Captain at the time of the Battle of Albuera, which took place on 6 May 1811. He later served during the American War of 1812 where he was promoted to Major, being severely wounded when the USS Adams ran aground in 1814. At the end of his military career he returned to Derbyshire and lived at Spondon, near Derby. |
