| Administrative History | Edith Mary Lyttelton Gell (1860-1944) was the wife of Philip Lyttelton Gell (1852-1926), who purchased the Hopton Hall estate in 1920. Edith was the fourth daughter of William Midleton, 8th Viscount Midleton, and his wife Augusta, daughter of the 1st Baron Cottesloe. She married Philip Lyttelton Gell on 29 July 1899. She was the author of many published works, including poetry, hymns, pageants and tracts, usually distributed only among her extended family and social circle, but occasionally reaching a wider audience, such as in her memoirs "Under Three Reigns". She supported what may be called tradional home values, and was conventional in outlook, writing on religion, religious quotations, empire and women in contemporary life. She wrote a biography on Eleanor Anne Franklin, called "John Franklin's Bride", which was published in 1930. |
