Title
Letter from John Franklin to his friend John Richardson, on start of his journey on H.M.S. Rainbow to the Mediterranean
Date
26 Nov 1830
Description
Pleased to have met Captain Phillips, appointed to Ariadne. Pleased with Rainbow: the ship, its officers and men. Describes passage from Portsmouth. Reports improvement in health of niece Mary under the care of Richardson and his wife. Describes observations of Plymouth and district and preparations for sailing. Mr Craig, surgeon, is comfortable; Mr Cunningham has joined the Jayne. Asks Richardson’s opinion about political changes: pleased at Lord Goderich being at the Colonial Branch given his support for expeditions in these days of “rigid economy”. Beechey’s book published. Dismissive of a request from Back, in Milan, asking for help in securing employment. Approves of Admiralty men being moved: Beaufort will be quite at home among Whigs. Invites Richardson to visit Lady Franklin and names her new doctor (Warren). Eleanor now well at Portsmouth. Writes in haste after having written five other letters. Regret at Hepburn having rheumatism: regrets not having been able to get him a better appointment.
