Title
Letter from John Franklin to John Richardson, on plans for next Arctic land expedition
Date
15 Dec 1823
Description
Lord Bathurst regards plan as practicable. Has made enquires at Greenwich: but no news of a possible vacancy for Richardson. Perhaps Richardson has not realised that green and red, his proposed colours for the men’s clothing are those of Russian uniforms and could generate confusion: suggests blue and silver. Pleased at Richardson’s approval of McVicar taking charge and proposes to take McVicar to the Royal Society. Reports news received from Mr West, Red River: payment of dole; delight at reception from Eskimos at Churchill; news of Augustus. Harding has learned Eskimo language and acts as interpreter at Churchill. Discusses publication of second edition. Franklin’s portrait imminent. Has a copy of Back’s “Canadian Airs” for Richardson: favourable review in “Musical Review” Barrow and Lord Bathurst want a second in charge in case of accident to Franklin
