| Administrative History | The Bagshawe family descended from Nicholas de Bagshawe, a Forester in fee in Peak Forest in 1317. By the 16th century there were two branches of the family: the Bagshawes of Abney and the Bagshawes of The Ridge in Chapel-en-le-Frith. The Ridge branch had been settled in Chapel-en-le-Frith since 1368 and held the estate for at least 12 generations. Thomas Bagshawe (1638-1721) built himself Bagshaw Hall in Bakewell in 1684. In the 18th century the estate passed to the Fitzherbert family of Tissington through marriage, where the mansion was demolished in 1820.
The Abney branch had land and lead mining sites across the Peak District, including at Abney, Hucklow, Litton and Chapel-en-le-Frith. William Bagshawe (1598-1669) bought Ford Hall during the Commonwealth reign. William's eldest son, Reverend William Bagshawe (1628-1702), inherited Ford Hall which he used as a base for his preaching and passed down his line of the family, whilst his second son, John Bagshawe (1635-1704), inherited most of the family estates. |
