Title
Derby Women's Arts Club
Description
The Derby Women's Arts Club was founded in 1922 to bring women together to practise the fine arts or crafts, providing mutual help and encouragement. Among the areas of activity undertaken by members of the club were painting, sketching, watercolours, pastels, miniatures, embroidery, lacework, leatherwork, stencilling and jewelry-making. The club held regular meetings, lectures and demonstrations of work and techniques by experts, and there was an annual public exhibition of works by members. Over time the club became more focused on the fine arts. During the early 1990s membership had dwindled and people had not come forward to become officials. When the Derby Sketching Club offered to merge with the Women's Arts Club in 1995, it was decided by the membership that this offer be accepted. The final meeting of the Derby Women's Arts Club took place on 18 January 1996. The records were transferred from the Derby Local Studies Library in March and July 2003. For records of the Derby Sketching Club, see D5943.
