Administrative History | The company had its roots in various Slaters (believed to be from Sudbury) who operated as builders from Uttoxeter Old Road, Derby, from around the 1840s. WH and J Slater became a limited company in 1956. The company manufactured bricks, pipes, garden ornaments and terra cotta goods using locally produced clay, at their works in Denby. The head office and yard were located in Vernon Street in Derby.
The family business was sold by the director and shareholders to new owners on 16 December 1980. The new owners were suspected (and later convicted) of financial offences, and the company survived only a few months before being put into compulsory liquidation upon the petition of HM Customs and Excise. The Denby works had been demolished by 1985. |
Custodial History | These records were deposited by a member of the family in May 2002 |
