Further Information
The expedition is the Walcheren expedition of 1809, led by John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham (1756-1835) during the Portland ministry. It was intended to open up a second front in the Low Countries to aid the Austrians, However the Austrians capitulated to the French and the length of the disembarkation meant that Antwerp had time to defend itself. The expedition was badly organised and the troops on the islands at the mouth of the Scheldt contracted malaria. By September the troops started returning, although half of the 40,000 were eventually lost.
The man commemorated by the statue may be Chatham.
