Further Information | In 1808 Napoleon forced the Spanish prince Ferdinand to return the crown to Carlos IV, and banished the family to Valençay, making his brother Joseph king. The news from Bayonne that Joseph had been accepted as king led to uprisings at Seville and Cadiz and in Asturias and to the formation of insurgent juntas. On the 23 July the Spanish beat the French at Bailén and Joseph left Madrid for Burgos, plundering the palaces as he left. |
