Further Information
It may be a portrait, but the theatrical pose and traditional Venetian red hat make it possible that this is a depiction of Shylock from 'The Merchant of Venice'. The actor Charles Macklin (?1697-1797) was famed for his performance of the role, including his attention to the historical details of Venetian Jewish dress.
