Administrative History | Percy Gamble was a grocer and coal merchant firstly at 14 The Dale, Wirksworth and from 1915 at 37 St Johns' Street, Wirksworth. His father, Henry Gamble, was a wholesale grocer in Wirksworth and provided his son with many of his supplies. Percy's daughter, Gladys, married Joshua Frederick Slater who continued the grocery business after Percy's death. J F Slater inherited a coal merchant's business from his father, John Slater. Eventually J F Slater changed the business to one dealing with radios and bicycles, and then changed it again to a hardware and electrical goods shop which it remained until its closure on 2 November 1983. Before Percy Gamble took over the premises at 37 St John Street, they had been owned by another grocer, A W Taylor. Joshua Frederick Slater was Secretary of Wirksworth Country Club (see D2775), proprietor of Wirksworth Cinema and a member of Wirksworth Urban District Council. |
