Title
Wright of Eyam Hall and Great Longstone
Date
1740-1912
Description
The Wright family had owned Eyam Hall, Longstone Hall and an estate in Eyam and Great and Little Longstone since the 17th century, and also held leases of some property in London and Sheffield at various times. The bulk of the first section of these papers was probably collected in relation to the valuation of the estate of Peter Wright [died 1862], who lived at Eyam Hall and ran the estate on behalf of his elder brother John William Wright of Sheffield. Peter Wright was the second son of James Farewell Wright and his wife Jane Sisum, and grandson of John Wright.
James Farewell Wright had purchased the Eyam estate from his nephew in the early 19th century, and from this time the Eyam branch and the Great Longstone branch of the family diverged. George Thomas Wright of Great Longstone died in 1907 and was succeeded by his son Walter Herbert Wright (1869-1926). Longstone Hall was sold by the family in 1929.
