| Administrative History | Herbert Brooke Taylor was born at Bakewell on 6th October 1855, son of John Taylor, solicitor of Bakewell (d. 1904). He was educated at Ockbrook and Lausanne (Switzerland), and was admitted as a solicitor in 1878. In 1884 he married Mary Taitt Mallalieu, and had a family of five sons and two daughters. In October 1871 he joined the Second Volunteer Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters. He was accepted as a Lieutenant in the 9th Derbyshire (Bakewell) Rifle Volunteers in April 1874. In 1879 he was promoted to Captain, and in 1896 he became Major and hon. Lieut.-Colonel in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters. He took command of the Battalion from 1900 to his retirement in 1904. On the formation of the Territorial Force in 1908, he became one of the original members of the Territorial Army Association, on which he served. During the war, he performed the duties of Chief Recruiting Officer in the Derbyshire district. Colonel Brooke Taylor was awarded the OBE in 1918. He died in 1923. |
