Administrative History
Records of Ashbourne Urban District Council and its predecessor Ashbourne Local board from 1884.The first Local Boards of Health were set up in 1848 to administer services relating to public health in populated areas not covered by Borough Councils. Under the Public Health Act 1872, they were designated Urban Sanitary Authorities, but the Ashbourne authority was always known as the Local Board. Urban Sanitary Authorities became Urban District Councils under the Local Government Act 1894.
