Owler Bar Turnpike Trust
Administrative History
In the 18th century special Acts of Parliament were passed in many areas of the country establishing turnpike trusts which had powers to collect tolls in exchange for providing and maintaining a road. A General Turnpike Act was passed in 1773 to speed up the Parliamentary process. In 1888 the responsibility for main roads was transferred to County Councils (non-main roads followed in 1894). The Owler Bar Trust had been wound up by 1880.
