| Administrative History | The Howard Family material probably belonged at some time in the Howard Estate Office in Glossop. After the Glossopdale estate was broken up and sold in the 1920s, most of the records were destroyed. Some survived but there are few proper series of records. The records have therefore been grouped together to make it easy to identify items.
The manor, rectory and advowson of Glossop belonged in medieval times to the Abbot of Basingwerke, Flintshire. After the dissolution of the monasteries, Henry VIII granted them in 1538 to the Earl of Shrewsbury. Gilbert, Earl of Shrewsbury was an early contributor to the foundation of Ashbourne Grammar School and through the marriage of his daughter Lady Alathea Talbot, in 1606 to Thomas Howard, the estate passed to the Howard family. A younger branch of the Howards acquired property separately in the north west of the county which was eventually amalgamated with the main holdings. From the surviving records it is not possible always to differentiate the different properties.
When the manor and rectory of Glossop were granted to Lord Shrewsbury, he was also given the right to the tithes formerly collected for the Abbot of Basingwerke. This right to the tithe passed to the Howard family with the estate. In the 1750s inhabitants of Maynstonefield/Chinley refused to pay tithe and a lengthy court case ensued. Many of the records here, and perhaps others listed as part of the Howard papers, were exhibited as evidence in the Chancery case, including the records of Easter dues, originally voluntary payments to supplement the priest's income which gradually became part of the established income.
Wren Nest Mill was built in 1815 by Thomas Ellison and subsequently bought by Francis James Sumner (1807-1884). It was run by Francis Sumner and Co Ltd from 1885, with a new syndicate formed in 1920. Thomas Charles Fielding worked for Francis Sumner and Co Ltd at Wren Nest Mill for many years, becoming General Manager in 1906. William and Frank Fielding were his sons. His daughter Edith married Charles Knott. |
