Title
Ogston (estate) rentals, with accounts from 1836
Date
1817-1924
Description
These comprise the Michaelmas rentals for each year which, strictly, run from Michaelmas-Michaelmas (Sep-Sep) but they were normally known as the rental for the year in which the rental ended, e.g. the rental for Sep 1825 - Sep 1826 was known as the 1826 rental.
This convention is used in the list following. The accounts occasionally include entries dated in the year following that of the rental, but this has not been noted.
The rentals give tenants' names and rents, including arrears from the previous year.
Until 1885, the accounts record payments for repairs and buildings, work on the Hall and on Arnold Grove [Nottinghamshire] family payments such as jointure and interest until 1855, rates, taxes, tithes, game preservation, labour, woods and plantations, soughing [drainage] property purchases, but not all of these expense headings occur throughout the period.
Particular payments noted were those for school fees and expenses of Gladwin Turbutt when a student late 1830s - 1840s, expenses arising out of the building of the North Midland Railway 1839-1843, Shirland School Room 1843, the birthday dinner 1844 and Brackenfield Church 1856.
The later accounts are essentially the same, but headings change. The heading for Game disappears and a capital account is included.
