National British Women's Total Abstinence Union
Administrative History
The British Women’s Temperance Association was founded in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1876. Following a split in 1893, the Women's Total Abstinence Union was formed. The two organisations were reunited in 1925 and known as the National British Women's Total Abstinence Union (NBWTAU). The NBWTAU was organised in county unions with branches. Within branches, there can be different sections including 'Little White Ribboners' for children up to 5 years. The Derbyshire branches amalgamated in 1991, centring on Matlock. The organisation was renamed the White Ribbon Association (WRA) in 2004.
