Title	Derby Wesleyan Methodist Mission Circuits

Description	This set of records comprises two series, although this is not reflected in the referencing system. In each case, a proportion of the records associated with each circuit pre-date its foundation. This is because the records were already in use when the functions and duties of an old circuit were conferred on a new one. D2670/J/MW/1-9: records of Derby Wesleyan Circuit, 1791-1965. John Wesley visited Derby in 1762 and the first Wesleyan chapel, in St Michael’s Lane, opened in 1765. In the late 18th century, the circuit included Ashbourne, Duffield, Melbourne, Burton on Trent, Ashby de la Zouch, Belper, Ashover, Wirksworth and Long Eaton (see D2670/J/MW/3/1-2) --- The circuit split into the Derby North (known as King Street) and Derby South Circuits in 1871. --- For baptism registers for the circuit see D3737/1/1-4. For schedules of Trust property 1855-1871 see D2670/J/MW/9/1. D2670/J/MW/10-21: record of Derby King Street Wesleyan Circuit, 1855-1938. This circuit, originally to be called the Derby North Circuit, was formed in 1871 when the Derby Wesleyan Circuit split into the Derby North and South Circuits. --- The “Derby North Circuit” originally included the Wesleyan churches at King Street, Draycott, Borrowash, Spondon, Ockbrook, Dale Abbey, Quarndon, Allestree, Breadsall, Weston, Morley Moor, Darley Abbey, Mackworth and Chaddesden. --- The Circuit amalgamated with the Derby Second (Primitive Methodist) Circuit in 1934 to form the Derby Derwent Circuit. --- For Trustees’ minutes 1865-1871 see D2670/J/MM/41/1.
