Title
Medical Appeal Tribunal case file for Thomas Eather, aged 61, [occupation not stated] at [colliery not stated], relating to an Industrial Accident
Date
1951
Description
Date of birth: 12/02/1890
Marital status: Married
Address: Wallersley,' New Mill Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse
Type of injury: Injury - groin
Description of accident: Walking over the overcast on way out and slipped
Further information: Eather slipped and ended up 'doing the splits' on 13 September 1948 resulting in a groin injury. On the Notice of Appeal dated 10 December 1950, he appealed against the final assessment of 5 per cent for life on the grounds that 'I have a nerve pain which comes down my right side every four minutes of my waking hours [...] I claim that my disability is more than the 5 per cent.' There is a Psychiatrist's report dated 24 January 1951 from The Coppice Hospital which details personal and family history. The conclusion states 'this man is suffering from post-traumatic neurosis, which is mainly of the sensory hysteria type, bases [sic] on his obsessional personality.' There is a handwritten letter dated 5 March 1951 by Eather which describes his feelings about the appeal and his working conditions and wages. On appeal on 8 March 1951 the tribunal found that the extent of disablement was 10 per cent, on the grounds that 'This man is suffering from post-traumatic neurosis. Physically there is no loss of faculty.'
